Castle's Pedigree & Color Genetics Program

Frequently Asked Questions

My printer won't print anything!

If your printer will not print from the program at all then take a look at your printer cable. Is it as thin as your mouse cord? Or is it as thick as the computers power cord? If you have the thin printer cable then your printer is printing from the COM port instead of from the LPT1 Printer port. My program can only print from the LPT1 Printer Port. You will need to obtain a "Parallel Printer Cable" to connect your printer to the computer.

The printer can not be connected to a USB or COM port.

Can the program be run from Windows?

Yes, the program can be run from windows, but to do so you will need to make sure that you have at least 600K of Conventional Memory available for program use, and you also need to make sure that there are no unnecessary programs running in the background. There are instructions in the manual on how to get an Icon to appear.

For Windows 3.1:
This program is a DOS program and really does better if windows is shutdown.

For Windows95:
Please see the
Windows 95 Memory Tips.

Check your Memory Configuration before Installation:

At any DOS Prompt type MEM then press ENTER Look for the line that says "Largest executable program size". To the right of that will be some numbers like "615K " If you have at least 580K or more your computer should be able to run my program without any problems from the DOS prompt with windows shut down.

If you would like to run it from Windows you will probably need to have at least 600K. If you run into any errors or problem when running in Windows please run from DOS with windows shutdown.

What Printers are supported?

Most new printers are not supported by my program. I suggest that you try the 90 day trial program to ensure that it works with your printer. A Windows 95 is in the process of being written which should solve this problem.

Most Dot Matrix type printers will work with the program, If your printer isn't listed try using one of the Generic printer drivers. Most Ink Jet type printers will work fine, with the exception of the Lexmark Line of printers. If your Ink Jet printer is not listed go ahead and try any of the Canon, Epson or HP DeskJet Printers. If you have a Laser printer you will need to try the HP LaserJet printer selection. So far I have not had any reports of any Laser printers that didn't work with this print driver.

If you have a printer that is not on the list and have found a printer selection that works or almost works please send us an email to let us know the make of your printer and the printer that you selected.

What breeds does the program support?

This program will work with any breed that the American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes. The color genetics portion of the program works best with breeds that have recognized colors listed in their breed standard. For those that do not, a large assortment of colors are included.

Can I print pedigrees with color, graphics?

The program doesn't have the capability to print in color or to add graphics. The program prints in Text mode and adding graphics is not possible, also most color printers won't print color in text mode. You can however pre-print your pedigree papers using a graphics program and then feed the paper back through your printer and have my program leave off most of the non-pedigree items.

When I upgrade from the Trial program will I need to reenter any data?

When you upgrade or reinstall a program the data base files remain untouched and all previous data will be available for use.

How far back are the Color Genes tracked?

The Program only examines back one generation. When the program evaluates a rabbit's color genes, it looks at the rabbit's color to see what genes are showing. Next it looks at the parents colors to see if any recessive genes can be added. If you only plan on using the program for it's color genetic features and do not plan on printing pedigrees then you don't need to enter an entire pedigree full of data, only the rabbit and it's parents need be entered.

What is a Training Data Base?

When you install your program for the first time you are given an opportunity to install a training data base. These data base files were used with my rabbitry and are there to help you learn how to use the program without risking real data from your rabbitry.

Once you are familiar with how the program works you should delete the training data base by going to the Options Menu and selecting Delete Training Data Base. Once the Training files are deleted this option in the menu will no longer be available, or needed.
